Mapping Wealth, What Are the Richest Cities in Each State?

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, real median household income in 2023 was $80,610 (up 4% from the previous year). This is the first year median household income has increased statistically since 2019. However, the wealthiest communities in America have disparate median incomes that can be quite a bit higher than the average. In three states (California, Virginia, and Washington), the median household income was over $200,000.

Inflation affects wealthy families differently from families with lower income levels. According to remarks made by McDonald’s CEO, Chris Kempczinski, on Thursday, May 1, 2025, there is a current divide in foot traffic in McDonald’s restaurants in America. While high-income consumers are still frequenting McDonald’s at their usual rate, low and middle-income consumers are eating at McDonald’s less than they were a year ago. Kempczinski said this “illustrates the divided U.S. economy, where low- and middle-income consumers in particular are being weighed down.” Also on Thursday, the CEO of Amazon, Andy Jassy, shared his concerns on the economy, saying, “There’s maybe never been a more important time in recent memory than now to try to keep prices low.”

Major cities tend to have greater productivity, which is reflected in median earnings. The U.S. economy is almost entirely dependent on big cities and metropolitan hubs. Data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis reveals that 90% of America’s gross national product was made in major metropolitan areas. In nearly every state in the US, there is at least one city within the state where household incomes are higher than the median. (Also see the cities with the highest poverty rates in each state.)

24/7 Wall St. identified the richest city in every American state using five-year estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2023 American Community Survey. We have named the city with the highest median household income in each state, only considering cities, towns, municipalities, and unincorporated communities with populations of at least 50,000. Neither Vermont nor West Virginia is home to communities with populations of 50,000 or more, and as a result, these states were excluded from analysis. In three states (Alaska, Delaware, and Maine), only one city met the population threshold. As a result, the listed city in these states ranks as the richest by default only and is noted as such. We have added supplemental data from the ACS.

(This article was updated on May 5, 2025, to reflect recent remarks regarding the economy from CEOs of major companies, including McDonald’s and Amazon.)

Why It Matters Today

Cities contribute disproportionately to the American gross domestic product. Furthermore, greater economic output is often evidenced in higher incomes. Nearly every state is home to at least one city where incomes are well above what is typical across the state as a whole. These places generally have well-educated populations, relatively low poverty rates, and higher-than-average home values. Currently, the divide between the rich and the poor seems to be widening, as recent remarks from CEOs seem to indicate.
