From Coast to Coast, These Are the Most Expensive Counties in Every State
Recent polls show that the majority of Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of the economy. An NBC News poll taken between March 7 and 11 found that 54% of 1,000 registered voters reported disapproval of President Trump’s handling of the economy. Another poll by Navigator Research showed a 51% disapproval rating of Trump’s economic policies. In the meantime, economists warn of a possible recession, as consumer confidence is down and the stock market has been volatile.

During a downturn, the cost of living in an area can be a significant factor in the ability to build wealth and stay economically healthy. Today, we are taking a look at which county in every state has the highest cost of living.

24/7 Wall St. went through the data state by state to identify the most expensive county to live in each state. To create the following list, we carefully reviewed data from the U.S. Department of Commerce. We then ranked every county or county in each state with the equivalent of estimated regional price parity (a measure of the cost of living relative to the national average.)

We have also included data on median household income and median home values from five-year estimates coming from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2022 American Community Survey. (Due to recent changes in county distinctions, ACS data for Connecticut is current as of 2021.) In 32 of the 50 states, there is at least one county where the cost of living exceeds the national average. Furthermore, in the most expensive counties in these states, the price of goods and services is anywhere from 0.2% to 32.6% higher than average.

(This article was updated on March 24, 2025, to reflect recent economic news and poll data regarding President Trump’s handling of the economy.)

Why It Matters Now

Businessmen use a calculator to calculate income and expenses in order to manage budgets to pay off credit card debt.

With recession fears returning, it makes sense to pay attention to the cost of living in your area. For years, the rapidly rising prices have been top of mind for millions of Americans. But while no corner of the country was spared from the effects of inflation, there are specific places where longstanding, deeply entrenched supply and demand dynamics have pushed the cost of living well above what most Americans are accustomed to. In most states, there is at least one county where goods and services are far more expensive than they are nationwide, on average.
