This year’s Critics Choice Awards have been handed out there were some very welcome wins here, not just the ones that have been pretty consistent winners so far like Hiroyuki Sanada, Zoe Saldana or “The Wild Robot”, but some others that haven’t won that much to date.
These include wins for Cristin Milioti, Kathy Bates, Adam Brody, Liev Schreiber, Michael Urie and Moeka Hoshi along with wins for the script for “The Substance,” the Reznor/Ross score for “Challengers,” the cinematography on “Nosferatu,” “X-Men ’97” for animated series and “Rebel Ridge” for telemovie. Jon M. Chu winning best director seems to have been the biggest shock of the night, but a welcome one for fans of the film.
“Conclave” and “Wicked” may have snagged eleven nominations each, but both only took home a few honors with the film awards fairly well spread out. Also scoring multiple award wins were “A Real Pain,” “The Substance,” “Challengers” and “Emilia Perez”. TV was dominated by “Shōgun,” “Baby Reindeer,” “Hacks,” and “The Penguin”.
Sadly some great shows like “The Diplomat,” “Slow Horses,” “Interview with the Vampire,” “Evil,” “The Old Man,” “The Boys” and “The Day of the Jackal” walked away empty handed, as did several high profile films including “A Complete Unknown,” “Nickel Boys,” “Queer,” “Gladiator II,” “Hard Truths,” “Maria” and “Sing Sing”.
