Marvel Animation has released a new ‘what’s to come this season’ trailer for its animated series “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” the clips following a PR cycle for the movie that has been dominated by one word – ‘woke’.
More specifically, the series’ star Hudson Thames was asked about the decision to introduce diverse characters into the mix for this “Spider-Man” animated series. He responded positively, and then said: “I mean, my biggest fear was that it was gonna be annoying and woke, and it wasn’t, and I was like, ‘Yes, this is great, it’s so well written,’ like it feels real.”
That comment went viral, receiving widespread negative backlash on social media and even demand that Marvel recast. Some say Spider-Man inherently ‘woke’ by his tendency towards social justice, while others have criticised the remark for being dismissive of progressive themes.
A recent Reddit AMA with showrunner Jeff Trammell saw the writer/producer asked about the controversy. He responded:
“Ha, I love Hudson and didn’t focus too much on what he said. I believe he simply misspoke, and I know that’s been weighing on him. I think we made a fantastic show that is going to appeal to a wide audience and hopefully captures what I love about this Spider-Man: that he’s a guy who cares deeply about the people around him and always tries to do the right thing.”
The series isn’t set in the same universe as the MCU (ie. Earth-616), so it is allowed to shake things up and show off new versions of characters potentially quite different to the ones we’re familiar with from either the MCU Spider-Man films or the prior ones.
Scorpion, Speed-Demon, and even Daredevil pop up in the new clips which you can see below. “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” will continue airing for the next few weeks on the Disney+ service.
