Mackie Talks “Captain America” Reshoots & Politics

Making a political thriller-themed film at the current time is hard enough, but promoting it has proven difficult for the cast of “Captain America: Brave New World”.

Marvel Studios hasn’t been able to escape from the ‘culture wars’ with the press tour for the new film. At any time, a random comment that would’ve barely been noticed ten years ago will be used as a rallying cry for one or the other side of the political spectrum to take issue with the movie.

So t various Disney publicists are potentially losing sleep each time an interview hits because politics keep coming up in interviews for the new “Captain America”. In one with Esquire, the film’s star Anthony Mackie was asked about what the interviewer dubbed the ‘inevitable’ comparisons that will be drawn between President Ross (Harrison Ford)/Red Hulk and current U.S. President Donald Trump. Mackie demurred on the question:

“I hope, as a country, we’re tired of all the political jousting. Let’s just go to the movies and chill the f— out. We could’ve made this motherf—er yellow and it would’ve been a problem.”

Mackie also spoke about the negativity surrounding the film following the reports of extensive reshoots and poor test-screenings:

“It’s literally the best movie it can be. It stays in the lines of Marvel. It stays in the lines of Captain America, and it’s fun and it’s big. Every movie that Marvel has made, every movie that DC has made – Star Wars, Star Trek, Disney – has done reshoots.”

Mackie also isn’t shy about how the film is almost a reward for him given past performances that should’ve been nominated for awards:

“This ain’t no overnight s—. It’s always apropos for me when awards season comes up. Because I know I’ve done at least four performances that could have been nominated – if not for a Golden Globe, then an Oscar or an Emmy. Captain America is my Oscar. Because I’ve been overlooked so many times in my career.”

“Captain America: Brave New World” opens in cinemas February 14th.
