Netflix’s TV series adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s “The Sandman” has been canceled, the show to end with the upcoming second season.
The streaming giant has released a new one-sheet for the new season, which will air this year; that poster confirming the run will be ‘The Final Season’.
The cancellation isn’t a huge surprise following the levelling of several sexual misconduct accusations at Gaiman, who helped develop the TV series.
Several of Gaiman’s projects have been impacted by the allegations – development of a film based on “The Graveyard Book” has paused at Disney, a musical based on “Coraline” has been scrapped, and he’s exited the final movie ending of the “Good Omens” TV series.
However, Variety says the costly series was already expected to end with its second season as castings indicated the show was jumping to the end of the comics sooner than fans anticipated. The second seasomn will adapt the ‘Season of Mists’ storyline from the comics.
The first season debuted in August 2022 and took three months to score a renewal – concerns over the cost vs. the viewership arose. The release plan for the second season of “The Sandman” aren’t being impacted by its being canceled, and the run is still aiming to release sometime later this year.
