CRYME inaugurates their exciting new label, SEVEN, with Hold On, a release that encapsulates the ethos of this queer and FLINTA*-leaning imprint. SEVEN celebrates the intersection of house and techno, focusing on uplifting sounds designed to ignite smiles and joy on the dance floor. This five-track EP sets the tone for what’s to come, blending innovation and groove with a range of interpretations that make Hold On an essential listen for electronic music enthusiasts.
The original mix of Hold On is a masterclass in house music production. CRYME crafts a vibrant rhythm section that pulses with energy, underpinned by a saturated low-end drive that anchors the track. The bassline is robust yet fluid, propelling the listener forward while maintaining a hypnotic consistency. The vocal lines, layered with subtle effects, add an emotive, human touch to the otherwise mechanical groove. Synth elements shimmer in the background, their interplay with the rhythm creating an atmosphere that’s simultaneously intimate and expansive. It’s a track built for the late-night dance floor, striking a perfect balance between intensity and euphoria.
The remixes breathe new life into the original, each offering a unique perspective. Cinthie’s rework stands out with its soulful approach. She transforms the track with airy strings and a choppy stab sequence that injects a playful energy. Her bass hook is irresistibly bouncy, adding a lighter, more buoyant vibe to the mix while retaining the danceability of the original. This is house music at its finest: soulful, dynamic, and infectiously groovy.
Obscure Shape shifts the release into darker territory with their techno-focused remix. The robust drum programming and fragmented vocal samples create a hypnotic rhythm that commands attention. Dubbed-out key fragments from the original add a haunting quality, making this remix a peak-hour weapon for techno enthusiasts.
Lydia Eisenblätter brings a grittier, rave-inspired sensibility to her remix. Crisp breakbeats drive the track, complemented by pulsating sub-bass and gritty stabs that nod to classic rave sounds. This remix feels nostalgic yet fresh, capturing the raw energy of underground dance music while staying true to the uplifting ethos of the label.
VOLPE’s remix closes the release on an ethereal note. Their dub techno interpretation is a spiraling journey, with shimmering echoes and heavily shuffled percussion creating a dreamlike atmosphere. The bouncy bass groove ensures the track remains grounded, providing a rhythmic foundation for the ethereal textures to float above. This remix offers a meditative yet danceable finale, perfectly rounding out the EP.
Hold On is a stellar debut for SEVEN, showcasing the label’s commitment to pushing boundaries and celebrating diversity within electronic music. Each track stands on its own, yet together, they form a cohesive narrative that explores the many faces of house and techno. CRYME and their collaborators have delivered a release that is as innovative as it is danceable, making Hold On an instant highlight of the year. We’re thrilled to host this release on our webzine and can’t wait to see what SEVEN has in store for the future.
