‘I have relapsed’ – LaLiga club captain confirms devastating cancer diagnosis

Las Palmas captain Kirian Rodriguez has announced the devastating news that he relapsed from cancer and will have to undergo treatment again. The 28-year-old Spaniard held a press conference to inform the media that he won’t be playing again this season. It’s my turn to fight this disease again. I hope to see you again next season. I’m 100 per cent convinced that it will be in the first division.” The midfielder informed the press that he wouldn’t field any questions, and then continued: “Firstly, I would like to thank the club and all the people who supported me at all times. “Secondly, I would like to thank the coaching staff and the players for respecting my decision not to be here. They have to focus on what is important, which is Saturday’s game.  “Thirdly, I apologise for calling you and not allowing you to ask questions. You like the morbid and this is not the time to ask questions.  “To repeat again, my privacy was not respected and, therefore, I could not allow questions. I am quite transparent.” Rodriguez went on to explain how he found out about the relapse, but again complained about a lack of privacy, saying: “I have been undergoing routine tests since I had cancer, every six months I have tests. “ At the beginning of January, I had a blood test. Many of you know this because nowadays not even nurses have the respect to keep the information.” Rodriguez’s last match was a 2-1 away defeat to Girona, and he mentioned his conviction about the team staying in the top flight as they are in a relegation battle, just two points from the bottom three. Last time he was out of action he earned legendary status on his return by helping the team back to LaLiga in 2023 for the first time since 2018. He’s continued to be an undisputed starter in the top flight, playing 37 out of 38 games in last season’s survival campaign and 21 out of 22 this term.
