How Would Your Country Fare Against the World’s Largest Military? And No, It Isn’t Who You Think

The world is preparing for battle. And that’s not just a statement designed to shock you, but one that’s actually coming true. China is purportedly building one of the largest underground military command centers that the world has ever seen. Over 10,000 troops from 40 nations have gathered in Africa for African Lion 25, U.S. Africa Command’s premier annual exercise, which is the largest in history this year. And as tensions continue to build and descend into violence between India and Pakistan, with Pakistani troops killing 54 militants sneaking into their country, it seems like further attacks are looming. War has always been a part of history and nation-building. But in today’s world, especially in Western natiosn, many people have enjoyed relative comfort and stability — making these global tensions and new grabs for contested territory somewhat frightening. (Which nations go to war most often?)

However, boiling down to the basics, it’s clear that the nations which have the largest militaries and the most deployable troops, alongside the most technologically advanced military equipment, are in the best position to protect themselves and allies should the need arise. 24/7 Wall St. wanted to understand the current state of international militaries to identify how prepared each nation is militarily. To determine the world’s largest militaries, we used data from Global Firepower’s 2025 Military Strength Ranking. This comprehensive, annually-updated registry ranks 145 total countries on their military power. To do so, Global Firepower considers everything from defense budgets and airpower to manpower and resources. The countries are then assigned a score, which signifies “more powerful” the closer the score is to 0.000. We listed the countries below in order from least military personnel to most military personnel. Additional information on ranking, airpower, and landpower were also taken from Global Firepower.

Why Are We Covering This Now?

Understanding global military dynamics is incredibly important due to the interconnected nature of international relations and conflicts. As long as civilization has existed, the world has witnessed shifting power balances and alliances which have ultimately shaped the current geopolitical landscape. While we tend to think of the United States or China as the largest key players on the world stage, several other nations hold their own spheres of influence and strengths that impact global relations from a military perspective. The largest militaries in the world are designed for protection and to project power. But with countries like Russia conscripting 160,000 military-age men between 18 and 30, we could see the balance of power begin to shift.
