Where the Most US Navy and Marine Corps Personnel Are Stationed

President Trump’s pick for secretary of the US Navy was confirmed on Monday, March 24, 2025, when the Senate voted 62-30. John Phelan is a private investment firm founder and a major Trump campaign donor with no prior military experience. Though some lawmakers have questioned his lack of military experience, Phelan said during his confirmation hearing that his outside business experience would be a benefit for change. The change of leadership comes at a critical moment for the U.S. Navy as the U.S. prepares for a possible confrontation with China over Taiwan.

The U.S. Navy and Marine Corps currently have personnel stationed around the world and at home within each of the 50 states. (While a distinct branch of the American military, the U.S. Marine Corps operates under the Department of the Navy.) 24/7 Wall St. took a close look at which states have the most US Navy and Marine Corps Personnel. (Also see the ships and submarines entering U.S. Navy service in the coming years.)

24/7 Wall St. compiled a list of the states with the most U.S. Navy and Marine Corps personnel using data from the Pentagon’s report Defense Spending by State. We ranked all 50 states by the total number of residents who work for either of the two branches.  We also included state-level data on Defense Department expenditures from fiscal year 2023. Finally, we added population data for the overall state from the 2024 U.S. Census Bureau.

(This article was updated on March 25, 2025, to reflect recent news on the confirmation of John Phelan as the secretary of the Navy.)

Why it Matters Now

As the U.S. braces for a possible conflict with China over control of Taiwan, the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps are critical to American defense strategy. There are nearly three-quarters of a million Navy and USMC personnel assigned to posts nationwide — including more than 400,000 active-duty service members. While these men and women are stationed across the 50 states, they are especially concentrated in certain parts of the country.
