“Werwulf” Is Eggers’ ‘Darkest’ Film To Date

Last month came the news that filmmaker Robert Eggers and Sjón have co-written the period lycanthropy tale “Werwulf” with the project to be Eggers’ next feature.

Details of the new film are under wraps, but the story unfolds in 13th century England and reportedly features dialogue that was true to the time period. It will also have translations and annotations as it uses Old English for the dialogue.

Eggers recently participated in a “Nosferatu” post-screening Q&A at the Lincoln Center, and spoke about “Werwulf” for the first time, saying:

“It’s a medieval werewolf movie and this is the darkest thing I have ever written, by far.”

In his time, he’s tackled witches, vampires, and horrors with some quite dark scenes both thematically and literally, so him going even further in that direction should be interesting.

“Nosferatu” has become the director’s highest-grossing film to date, making $156.3 million off a $50 million budget. Filmmaker Martin Scorsese has sung its praises this week on TCM, saying:

“It’s amazing. Anything this guy does, amazing. That’s one film you don’t do much after seeing. You’re still in the world. You’re in Transylvania and it’s really … [laughs] Man, he’s something.”

Eggers, Sjón, Chris and Eleanor Columbus will produce “Werwulf” and Focus Features has set a Christmas Day 2026 release.
