These Warships and Submarines Are the Future of the U.S. Navy

On April 5, 2025, the United States Navy unveiled its latest submarine, the USS Iowa. This new 377-foot-long submarine is a Virginia-class fast attack vessel built by General Dynamics Electric Boat. The USS Iowa can dive deeper than 800 feet and travel 29 miles per hour. Because it has a nuclear reactor, it never needs refueling. The submarine also has a special torpedo room that can be changed for different missions and carries Tomahawk cruise missiles. At the submarine’s commissioning ceremony, Navy Secretary John Phelan emphasized, “Make no mistake, naval warfare is evolving”. He explained that the U.S. needs to update its structure, ships, and weapons to effectively handle today’s global conflicts and protect the nation.

The good news is that the United States is doing just that as it continues to add new and improved ships and submarines to its arsenal. To determine the future warships and submarines of the U.S. Navy, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the Upcoming U.S. Navy Commissionings, a military data site. We compiled data on all ships and submarines that have at least had their keel laid and ordered these alphabetically. We also included supplemental information regarding the vessel’s classification, unit type, and current status.

This is an updated version of a previously published story to reflect the newest additions and plans for future U.S. Navy warships and submarines.

Why This Matters Today

As a force of over 430,000 active and reserve personnel, the U.S. Navy greatly impacts U.S. jobs and the economy.  The introduction of new vessels like the USS Iowa illustrates the Navy’s strategic priorities, the evolution of naval warfare, and how it plans to ensure national security and support American development. The USS Iowa’s advanced features demonstrate where the Navy is expanding its efforts in undersea warfare and power projection and how the U.S. is extending its global influence while maintaining a secure balance within an international community.
