How to respond to people telling me I'm smart?
I am often told that I am smart. Someone will hear about something I did or made, or just my field of study and say "Wow you are so smart!" I don't think they are being sarcastic from their tone, and I try not to speak in a way that would garner such remarks, so I take it as a compliment. But then I am unsure how to respond. Sometimes, someone will say this to me after I tell them something that I don't think is very impressive. In this case, I will occasionally say something like "It's not as hard as it sounds/looks!" and then "I learned from YouTube videos" or "I can teach you how sometimes," but I don't think this goes over particularly well. Many times they will then reveal to me that they have tried the same hobby/activity in the past and failed at it, so I feel that I have just accidentally insulted them. I would say "Thank you!" to this kind of comment as with other compliments, but it feels weird and awkward to me. Ideally, I'd like to address the comment without being awkward and then continue talking about whatever the topic it came up in was. How do I react to such comments to achieve that?
