Detroit Officially Proclaims February 7 as J Dilla Day
J Dilla's birthday, February 7, will officially now be known as J Dilla Day in the late artist's home of Detroit, Michigan.As per HipHopDX, the news was confirmed by the city council earlier in the week, with the day commemorating how Dilla “transcended genre and influenced not only Hip Hop and electronic artists but also pop, soul, classical and jazz musicians.” His daughter, Ja’Mya Yancey, said during the meeting,“Words cannot describe how grateful we are for this declaration.” She continued, “For years, he has been celebrated for the entire month of February all over the city, country and the world."Yancey added, “My sister [Ty-Monae Whitlow] and I continue to try to uplift and honor his name and legacy, and this is such a monumental step to help us continue on the work he left behind.”The city also unveiled a new street sign near Dilla's family home on the corner of Nevada and Charest. In addition, the Detroit Pistons are set to host a private ceremony on the evening of February 7 with his family expected to be present.
