As Gun Sales Decline, These Companies Continue to Lead the Industry

Gun sales have been on the decline for several years. Recent reports show that since 2020, after a surge of gun sales during the pandemic, sales numbers have dropped. Also, gun production has been declining since 2021 to match consumer demand. However, sales are still mainly higher than they were before the pandemic. Since 1899, 500 million guns have been produced for the U.S. market.

Despite declining gun sales, there are thousands of gun manufacturers in the U.S. In 1975, according to the ATF, there were 364 licenses issued to gun manufacturers in the United States. By 2022, that number had climbed to 18,784. The largest increase has occurred after 2010. In 2010, there were 4,293 licenses issued. But that number rose over 14,000 in under 15 years. 24/7 Wall St. took a look at which of the thousands of gun manufacturers in America have the biggest sales. The top-selling companies listed below have dominated the firearm market for many years. According to the ATF, the top three companies on this list accounted for 42% of all firearm manufacturing in the U.S. between 2016 and 2020.

24/7 Wall St. identified the 25 most popular firearm companies in the U.S. by reviewing a report from Gun Genius, which analyzed sales data from the online firearm marketplace GunBroker.com. We ranked brands on sales volume in the 2024 calendar year, though exact sales figures were not provided.

(This article was updated on April 17, 2025, to reflect the decrease in gun sales over the past few years.)

Why It Matters Right Now

Gun sales have been on the decline since the rise in sales during the pandemic. And yet, on a global scale, American consumer demand for firearms remains unmatched. Thousands of gunmakers have operations in the U.S. These companies range in size from small-scale operations to major enterprises that rank among the largest names in global arms manufacturing. Despite the crowded field of suppliers, a handful of firearm brands stand out as being especially popular with gun owners in the United States.
