Zach Bryan and Jack Van Cleaf team for collab version of “Rattlesnake” & video
After Zach Bryan posted a partial cover of Jack Van Cleaf’s 2022 song ”Rattlesnake,” the two have teamed up to duet on a new version.
In 2022, singer/songwriter Jack Van Cleaf released the song “Rattlesnake,” and it caught the attention of Zach Bryan, who posted a partial cover of it to social media. Now, Zach and Jack have convened to release a new collaborative version of the song. It’s a lovely, stripped-down alt-country/indie folk song that finds Zach and Jack trading lines and harmonizing over a gentle acoustic guitar, punctuated by some melancholic trumpets. The drums kick in about halfway through, and it builds and builds to a rousing climax. Zach also features heavily in the video, which was filmed during the recording sessions at NYC’s Electric Lady Studios.
“Zach started sharing the song on social media, then eventually sent me a DM that said, ‘If you ever want to record a version of this with me, I’m in!’,” Jack says. “Zach really inspired me in the studio. I was moved by his dedication to the moment and capturing something alive, rather than painstakingly pursuing perfection with endless takes.”
Zach adds, “To become the best of friends with people through music in the city. Think that may be the point of all this. Jack & me re-recorded one of the best written songs of all time (jack is a genius) and hope u guys listen to it.”
This new version of “Rattlesnake” doubles as the lead single of Jack Van Cleaf’s just-announced sophomore album, JVC, due May 5 via Dualtone Records (pre-order). The album also features a guest appearance by Gatlin, backing vocals from Annika Bennett and Heaven Schmitt (aka Grumpy), and contributions from his friends Austin Burns, Ethan Fortenberry, Hunt Pennington, Adam Carpenter, Nathan Cimino, and Aaron Krak. Meanwhile, Zach also just released his own new song “Blue Jean Baby” this week and he’s gearing up for some massive shows, including three nights at NJ’s MetLife Stadium with Kings of Leon and The Front Bottoms.
