UK art punks Maruja introduce new EP with 7-minute jazz song “Aon” (listen)

Rising UK art punks Maruja had a big 2024 that saw the release of two records, Connla’s Well and The Vault, and now they’ve announced another. Tir na nÓg is a four-song, 25-minute EP that the band says was recorded live in studio and fully improvised. It comes out on February 21 via Music For Nations (pre-order), and the first taste is the seven-minute opening track “Aon.” Fueled by Joe Carroll’s Sufi-inspired saxophone playing, it’s a blown-out, wordless spiritual jazz odyssey that finds the band’s punk side only present in spirit, and Maruja do this with as much intensity as their rock-oriented material. Check it out below.

As mentioned, Maruja are going on their first US tour this spring, including a stop at Brooklyn’s Market Hotel on March 22, as well as appearances at SXSW and Big Ears. They play UK hardcore fest Outbreak after that. All dates are listed below.
