These States Manufacture the Most Guns

Democratic lawmakers are asking the Trump administration to help curb the fentanyl trade by reducing the movement of American-made guns over the U.S.-Mexico border. President Trump has expressed his concern that fentanyl is being trafficked to America from Mexico and Canada. Fourteen Democratic lawmakers expressed in a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, and Attorney General Pam Bondi to use the Trump administration’s designation of Latin American gangs and cartels as foreign terrorists.

“If you want to really tackle the fentanyl trade, you have to tackle the source of the power of the people who are involved in that trade, Rep. Dan Goldman, a New York Democrat, told CBS News. “There’s no way to do that without addressing the guns that they receive from American-made manufacturers and dealers,” he continued. By using this designation, the U.S. government could work to disrupt the financial networks of the drug cartels. It would also make it possible to impose harsher penalties on those who support or provide goods to them.

As lawmakers look for stronger measures to combat the fentanyl crisis, we can look at the source of the firearms used by drug cartels. It’s estimated that 200,000 weapons are trafficked south to Mexico each year. Many of those firearms are manufactured in the U.S. Understanding where these weapons come from helps us address the broader network that enables cartel violence and drug trafficking. (Also see the impact banning guns had on these 12 countries.)

By using data from the ATF, 24/7 Wall St. identified the states manufacturing the most firearms. We ranked states on the number of firearms produced by in-state gunmakers in 2022 (the most up-to-date data from the ATF at this time). We’ve included information on the arms and ammunition industry employment and direct economic impact in 2023 from the NSSF. We also added the total estimated number of gun ownership licenses in each state, including the percentage of households that report owning firearms, using a report from World Population Review as of 2025.

(This article was updated on May 13, 2025, to reflect recent news regarding bipartisan attempts to reduce the flow of fentanyl into the United States through the southern border.)

Why It Matters Now

AUSA Annual Meeting And Exposition Held In Washington, D.C.

Firearm sales have hit unprecedented highs in the U.S. in recent years. To meet growing demand, many of the world’s largest gunmakers have manufacturing operations in the United States. Each of the 50 states is home to at least one federally licensed gunmaker, and in several states, guns and ammunition are a billion-dollar industry.
