These Are the Latest Additions to the U.S. Navy

The United States Navy is constantly evolving and integrating cutting-edge technology to maintain its global maritime dominance and ensure national defense. This year, several key vessels will be commissioned into the fleet, including a Virginia-class submarine, the USS Iowa (SSN-797), which will be commissioned on April 5, 2025. Each of these new ships further solidifies the U.S. Navy’s position and enhances its combat capabilities.

The U.S. Navy is diverse and strategically balanced, with destroyers (mainly of the Arleigh Burke-class) making up about 30% of the active fleet and submarines (largely Virginia-class nuclear attack subs) making up about 25% of the fleet. The remaining portion includes littoral combat ships, cruisers, and amphibious assault ships. In addition, the Navy is also introducing the new Constellation-class frigates.

Here, 24/7 Wall St. is taking a closer look at the newest ships to join the Navy. To determine the U.S. Navy’s newest warships, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed various military and historical sources. We compiled data on all ships and submarines — 40 in total — that have been commissioned in the service of the U.S. Navy for five years or less and ranked them by age. It should be noted that this list is current as of March 2025.

(This is an updated version of a previously published story to reflect the most recently commissioned vessels in the U.S. Navy as of March 2025.)

New additions to the U.S. Navy represent the latest advancements in naval technology and strategic capabilities. This directly impacts the nation’s capacity to maintain a secure balance within an international community. The commissioning of the USS Iowa (SSN-797) on April 5, 2025, signifies major enhancements in warfare capabilities with advances in stealth, weaponry, and long-range operational capacity.
