Qi2 is the new standard for wireless charging. However, for some reason, Samsung has opted not to include it in their latest Galaxy S25 phones. But it turns out that’s not entirely accurate. It seems that the Galaxy S25 series does support Qi2, in fact it is the first smartphones to come with Qi 2.1 support.
Qi 2.1 is basically an updated version of Qi2. It was introduced at CES 2025 and brings support for “Qi2 Ready”. Basically what this means is that it allows smartphone manufacturers to use the Qi2 wireless charging protocol, but they will not have to include magnets in the phone.
Instead, these handset manufacturers can offload the magnets to a case. This is why Samsung has not included magnets in the Galaxy S25 phones itself. The company is working with third-party accessory makers to create cases with magnets. Samsung is also selling some of these cases themselves, which means consumers will have to spend more money to get the full Qi2 experience.
For those unfamiliar, Qi2 is an updated version of the Qi wireless charging standard. It was developed with a bit of help from Apple who lent the Wireless Power Consortium its MagSafe technology. This means that Android users will be able to a get similar MagSafe-like wireless charging experience on their smartphones.
However, Samsung’s decision not include built-in magnets means users who use their phones without cases will need a case to use the Galaxy S25 with MagSafe/Qi2 accessories.
