The “Romy & Michele” Sequel Is A Go

A sequel to 1997’s “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion” is finally moving forward at 20th Century Studios.

Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow are in negotiations to reprise their starring roles in the film and serve as executive producers. Tim Federle (“Better Nate Than Never,” “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series”) will direct the feature.

“Emily in Paris” showrunner Robin Schiff, who wrote the original film, has returned to pen the sequel. Also back is veteran producer Laurence Mark, who is joined by “Newhart” creator Barry Kemp.

Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow starred in the original, which is about two unaccomplished women who try to impress their former classmates at their 10th anniversary high school reunion by making up fake careers.

Their lie? They invented Post-its. Janeane Garofalo, Alan Cumming, Julia Campbell, Vincent Ventresca, Elaine Hendrix, Justin Theroux and Camryn Manheim also starred in the film, which has become a cult hit in the years since.

The new take targets a shooting start date in June. Production is looking to possibly film in Los Angeles, but no location has been locked in yet.

The original was released via the now-dormant Touchstones Pictures, so the shift to 20th Century Studios is fitting.
