As reported by NBC News, the Trump administration is considering restructuring its role in NATO and giving up the role of NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe (known as SACEUR). This position has been held by an American general since 1949 when NATO was formed. Walking away from the post could be seen by European countries as the U.S. ending, or beginning to end, its NATO membership. However, in a rare act of disagreement by Republicans, two top Republican leaders spoke out against the move. U.S. Representative Mike Rogers and U.S. Senator Roger Wicker expressed their concern in a statement saying, “Such moves risk undermining American deterrence around the globe and detracting from our negotiating positions with America’s adversaries.”
Additionally, NATO allies are considering ending contracts with purchasing F-35 jets from the U.S. The F-35A Lightning II is one of the most widely flown combat aircraft of NATO. The F-35 was chosen in 2001 by the Department of Defense to be a fifth-generation fighter jet in the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program. In the program, the U.S. leads the development of combat aircraft that are used by NATO countries. According to experts, there are advantages for NATO countries to use the same plane. However, tensions between President Trump and NATO countries have several NATO countries questioning contracts with the U.S. to purchase F-35 Lightning IIs. We ranked the list by how many are currently in active service. We also included data on the type of aircraft and top speed, excluding trainer aircraft.

The Rafale is capable of operating from both land-based airstrips and aircraft carriers, offering a lot of flexibility for NATO in various scenarios.
8. F-22 Raptor

Early variants of the F-16 sell for roughly $13 million with more recent variants starting between $25 and $30 million. However, the most advanced versions of this aircraft can cost anywhere upwards of $60 million.
The F-16 comes standard with a 20mm internal automatic cannon and can be equipped with a range of air-to-air missiles and air-to-ground missiles. It can reach speeds of roughly 1,300 mph and has an operational range of 2,600 miles. The Fighting Falcon fills a variety of roles for any air force but it is primarily used for interception and general strike missions.
