Stereo MC’s brought great vibes and ’90s dance classics to their first NYC show in 24 years (review, video, setlist)

The week of January 20 was a tough one for a lot of people, with bad news flying faster than you could even comprehend. Those dark clouds lifted, at least for a couple hours, on Friday night at Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg as UK group Stereo MC’s played their first NYC show since 2001. The group — original members frontman Rob B, beatmaker Nick Hallam and vocalist Cath Coffey, augmented by new drummer Tansay Omar (original drummer Owen If died in 2022) — brought positive vibes and a whole bunch of late-’80s / early-’90s dance tracks which still sounded great and had the room dancing all night.

Stereo MC’s set included the lion’s share of 1992’s Connected, including singles “Step It Up,” “Ground Level,” “Creation” and, of course, the album’s hit title track, which was one of the evening’s high points. The crowd was there for all of it, though, and the set also included a reworked version of “Elevate My Mind” and “Lost in Music (both from 1990’s Supernatural), and lots more. Rob B, in his signature jumpsuit and cap, hasn’t lost his touch or flow one bit and Cath still hits all the high notes. They were great. Rob seemed a little taken aback by Music Hall of Williamsburg’s reaction to the show, saying he had no expectations for this short US tour and thanking everyone for turning out and dancing. The crowd roared. It was a great way to salvage a bad week.

The band say they’ve been working on new music and hopefully we’ll get that, and have them back in North America, sooner than later. Check out a few fan-shot videos from MHOW show, plus the setlist and Stereo MC’s Fallon performance from last week, below.

Stereo MC’s also made us a list of their favorite ’90s dance tracks.
