South Korean investigators indict impeached President Yoon on insurrection charges

Prosecutors in South Korea have indicted impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol in connection to insurrection charges.

South Korea’s parliament voted to impeach Yoon last month after he briefly declared martial law and thrust the country into chaos.

South Korean news outlets reported that the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office had indicted Yoon over rebellion charges, The Associated Press reported.

Since declaring martial law, Yoon has since apologized. His action sparked outrage from citizens and lawmakers. The parliament blocked the martial law declaration and Yoon later took it back.

Law enforcement investigated Yoon, requesting warrants, and was eventually successful in retrieving the president.

Yoon later said he was skipping the first day of his impeachment trial over security concerns.

Yoon defended his reasoning for declaring martial law during his appearance before the Constitutional Court. His presence did little to help him, and South Korean investigators attempted to indict the president.
