Report: Jack Flaherty agrees to two-year deal with Tigers

Jack Flaherty is a World Series champion, and now he has a new contract to show for his return to prominence in 2024.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Flaherty and the Detroit Tigers agreed to a two-year, $35 million deal on Sunday that includes an opt-out after the first season.

The 29-year-old right-hander split time in 2024 between the Tigers and Los Angeles Dodgers after a trade deadline swap sent him to the West Coast. Between the two stops, Flaherty threw 162 innings in 2024, posting a 3.17 ERA, 194 strikeouts and a 1.06 WHIP.

It was Flaherty’s best season since 2019, when he finished fourth in NL Cy Young voting as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Flaherty spent the first seven years of his career with the Cardinals before being dealt to the Baltimore Orioles at the 2023 deadline and signing a one-year, $14 million contract with Detroit last off-season.

A native of Burbank, Calif., Flaherty grew up a Dodgers fan and said, “I love this city. I never want to leave” during the World Series parade through Los Angeles. But with the champs adding Blake Snell and Roki Sasaki earlier this off-season and the lure of a $35 million deal, Flaherty will be taking his talents to Detroit.

In the post-season, Flaherty finished with a 7.36 ERA over 22 innings, making starts in every round for the Dodgers. However, his effectiveness in October waivered. From the highs of throwing seven scoreless in Game 1 of the NLCS to the lows of being chased after allowing four runs in an inning and a third in Game 5 of the World Series, Flaherty experienced it all in Los Angeles’s World Series run.
