Oscars May Make AI Use Disclosure Mandatory

Following the controversy over the use of A.I. in Oscars Best Picture contender “The Brutalist,” the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (AMPAS) is reportedly actively exploring the idea of changing up its Oscar submission requirements.

According to Variety, the change would see films being required to disclose their use of A.I. in filmmaking. The Academy currently offers only an optional disclosure form for A.I. use, but this change would make the disclosure mandatory and could be in place in time for next year’s Oscars.

The Governors and Branch executive committees are reportedly now investigating how A.I. is used in each branch. Despite all the attention to “The Brutalist” over its use of AI for its accents and one sequence towards the end, other Best Picture nominees have also used the tech to varying extents, including “A Complete Unknown,” “Dune: Part Two” and “Emilia Pérez” according to the trade.

The Oscar rules for next year are expected to be published in April with the Academy’s SciTech Council currently working on recommended language.

AI was used heavily in VFX this year, from software used for the Fremen blue eye effect in “Dune: Part Two,” to tech being used in “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” to steadily transition the character’s visual features from child actor Alyla Browne into actress Anya Taylor-Joy.

This year’s Oscars air on March 2nd, check out the official poster art below for this year’s ceremony released earlier today.
