Lisandro Martinez injury a ‘serious situation’ after being stretchered off in tears
This looked like a bad one.
Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez was stretchered out of the game against Crystal Palace on Sunday in tears, with Ruben Amorim describing the injury as a ‘serious situation’.
The Argentina international was challenging for the ball with Eagles winger Ismaila Sarr and went down awkwardly.
He immediately called to be substituted and was left on the floor, grasping his knee and clearly in a lot of pain.
Matthijs de Ligt replaced him after the incident 82 minutes into the game and Martinez was clearly distraught as he left the field on a stretcher.
Speaking after the match, Red Devils manager Amorim said: ‘I think it’s a bad situation, let’s wait to assess things with the doctor, but I think it’s a serious situation.
‘Licha is really important for us, not just the football player but the character that he has, especially in these hard moments, so now we have to help Licha like he has been doing for so long.’
The 27-year-old was making his 20th Premier League start of the season in a campaign that has not been too badly impacted by injury until this weekend.
The former Ajax man made just 11 Premier League appearances last season due to multiple fitness problems and he now looks likely to face another spell on the sidelines.
It was bad news for the Red Devils on an afternoon to forget for them as Crystal Palace left Old Trafford with a 2-0 win.
Jean-Philippe Mateta scored both goals for Oliver Glasner’s side, netting in the 64th and 89th minutes and taking the Eagles above the Red Devils in the Premier League table.
Palace are now 12th, one point and one place ahead of Manchester United.
