Flames not taking offers on Andersson, Kadri, Weegar

After swinging a deal for forwards Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee on Thursday night, the Calgary Flames are gearing up for a playoff push. Which means Rasmus Andersson, Nazem Kadri and MacKenzie Weegar are off the table in potential trade talks, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported Saturday.

Both Weegar and Kadri have been locked up by Calgary long-term, with Weegar in the middle of an eight-year pact that keeps him on the Flames blue line until 2031, and Kadri signed on a seven-year deal through 2029.

Andersson, however, is scheduled to hit free agency following the 2025-26 NHL season, which has raised some question marks around his future in Cowtown.

At 25-18-7, the Flames entered Saturday holding down the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference post-season picture, which had led them to rebuff teams’ interest in any of the veteran trio, according to Friedman.

“The Flames have told teams that Andersson, Kadri and Weegar are not available,” Friedman said during the Saturday Headlines segment on Hockey Night in Canada. “Weegar has a contract, Kadri has a contract, but a number of teams have asked about him.

“Andersson, as you know, is heading into the final year of his deal, and the Flames are getting more and more confident they’re going to be able to keep him.”

The 28-year-old Swedish defender said in an exclusive interview with Sportsnet’s Eric Francis in early January that he “would love” to remain with the Flames — the franchise that drafted him in 2015.

As Calgary has exceeded expectations in 2024-25, all three of Kadri, Weegar and Andersson have played key roles in adjusting the franchise’s outlook. A year ago, the Flames were one of the NHL’s major sellers at this point in the season.

Kadri is second on the team in points (34) and goals (17) while playing just under 19 minutes per game. Weegar has six goals and 25 points, leading Flames defenceman in points, while logging 23:27 of ice time per game with a plus-11 rating. And Andersson averages the most time on ice per game of any Calgary skater at 24:10 and has seven goals and 120 blocked shots.

So, with the Flames sitting on the edge of playoff contention, it makes sense that teams might ask about some of their more impactful skaters, but for those clubs, Friedman said Calgary has returned a simple message:

“We’re keeping them, we’re in the race and they’re important to us.”
