Ex-Formula 1 racer Giancarlo Fisichella will join Ferrari customer outfit LM Corsa for the revived Suzuka 1000km fixture of the Intercontinental GT Challenge in September.
The 52-year-old, who achieved a best finish of second during his grand prix career at the Japanese venue in 2005, is set for his return to international competition having focused exclusively on his Italian GT commitments for the last two years.
He will share LM Corsa’s No. 60 Ferrari 296 GT3 with Shigekazu Wakisaka and another amateur driver yet to-be-named for the fourth round of the IGTC.
Long-time Ferrari GT driver Fisichella won last year’s Italian GT Endurance crown driving a 296 GT3 for Scuderia Baldini together with Arthur Leclerc and Tommaso Mosca.
He last raced internationally for the Scuderia in 2022 as part of a GTE-Am campaign in the FIA World Endurance Championship for Iron Lynx.
LM Corsa, owned by Osaka Toyopet Group, confirmed its intention to participate at Suzuka when it revealed its programs for the year on Friday at the Osaka Auto Messe.
It will continue to field a 296 GT3 in GT World Challenge Asia powered by AWS to be shared by Wakisaka and another as-yet unconfirmed driver, although it was revealed that Fisichella could also make selected outings to prepare for Suzuka.
In addition, it will field a Lexus LC500 constructed by apr to GTA-GT300 rules in SUPER GT this year, as previously announced by Toyota.
Hiroki Yoshimoto and Shunsuke Kohno remain as the primary drivers for the new-look No. 60 car, supported by third driver Reimei Ito, who replaced an absent Yoshimoto for qualifying in last year’s Suzuka finale, the final round for the team’s old GR Supra.
