DreamWorks Animation’s “Dog Man” is heading for a domestic opening weekend of $33 million, surpassing projections that were closer to the lower $20 million range this past week.
The adaptation of Dev Pilkey’s beloved kids books, and a spin-off to 2017’s “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie,” took in around $10 million on Friday (including previews) and has been buoyed by good reviews from critics as well as an excellent ‘A’ CinemaScore from audiences.
The $40 million budgeted film follows a human police officer and his faithful dog, who are fused together in a life-saving surgery after they’re injured on the job. The movie has generated a lot of social media buzz and is doing better than the $23.8 million that “Captain Underpants” did when it launched.
The Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid-led “Companion” is also riding excellent word of mouth to a solid number – $4 million on Friday (including previews) and around $10 million for the weekend. The superbly-reviewed thriller cost less than $10 million to make, so it’s understandably doing well.
Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” came in third with a $7 million three-day total in its seventh weekend, fourth is the Keke Palmer comedy “One of Them Days” with $6 million for the weekend, and fifth is “Flight Risk” at $5 million – down by 57% on opening weekend.
The box-office news comes as it has been revealed at Phase Hero that “Kraven the Hunter” has ended its theatrical run with a $59 million gross from a $110 million budget.
