Djo Begins Again With ‘Basic’ Single, New Album, Tour

Actor/musician Joe Keery, who enjoyed a massive viral last year with his project Djo‘s two-year-old song “End of Beginning,” returns today (Jan. 24) with the new single “Basic Being Basic” and details of an album and world tour. All this activity comes ahead of season five of the Keery-starring Netflix series Stranger Things, which will premiere at some point this year.

The tongue-in-cheek, synth-y”Basic Being Basic” heralds the third full-length under the Djo moniker, The Crux, which is due April 4 via AWAL. Keery wrote the material on his own or in tandem with Adam Thein and recorded it at New York’s Electric Lady Studios. Musically, it’s said to move away from its prior synth-forward sound to one spotlighting “lush guitars and instrumentation reminiscent of late 60’s and 70’s pop.”

More from Spin:

Djo will support The Crux with a spring and summer world tour, beginning on release date in Portland, Or., and also including appearances at the Coachella festival in mid-April and in Europe for headlining club shows throughout June. Post Animal, the Chicago-based rock band of which Keery was once a member, will serve as the opening act. Tickets go on sale Jan. 31.

Beforehand, Djo will play six shows in February in Australia and New Zealand as part of the Laneway festival, plus a Feb. 12 headline gig in Sydney. See the full tour dates below.

“End of Beginning” was belatedly discovered in 2024 by the TikTok algorithm, propelling it to the top five on the charts in multiple countries and No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. To date, it has racked up more than 1.3 billon streams on Spotify.
