The Disney+ service reportedly lost 700,000 subscribers over the last three months of 2024. As a result, and not counting India’s ultra-cheap Disney+ Hotstar service, Disney+ now has 124.6 million subscriptions worldwide
The company, reporting on the final calendar quarter of 2024 which is also the first quarter of fiscal year 2025, says ESPN+ also lost 700,000 subscriptions in the same period. But Hulu added 1.6 million which brings it up to 53.6 million.
The company’s streaming business was reportedly profitable for its third-straight quarter and beat key financial metrics. Even so, this is a long way from June-September 2024 when 4.4 million subscribers signed on.
Speculation is rife as to the reasons why – from price hikes to expired promotions to a lack of original content. Additionally, the brands that do bring people in – namely “Star Wars” and Marvel – aren’t the guarantees they once were.
The company is also forecasting another ‘modest decline’ in subscriptions for calendar 2025. It comes as Disney’s theatrical business bounced back last year with the help of “Moana 2,” “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine”.
According to Nielsen, Disney still remains #1 among all media companies in terms of total TV usage with “Bluey,” “Grey’s Anatomy” and Fox’s Animation Domination shows still huge draws. Check out the Big Game spot the streamer has created that will air during the Super Bowl on Sunday.
