Coventry City booked their place in the FA Cup 4th Round with a 4-3 penalty shootout win over Sheffield Wednesday at the CBS Arena. 

The Sky Blues had been on course to win in 90 minutes until they conceded a late Anthony Musaba equaliser three minutes into second-half stoppage time, forcing the 3rd Round tie into extra-time and penalties.

Coventry knows what it is like to lose a shootout. They suffered a Wembley heartbreak against Manchester United in last season’s FA Cup semi-final. On this occasion, the Sky Blues came through against Wednesday after Norman Bassette slotted home the winning spot-kick.

The confidence-boosting win was the catalyst for the Sky Blues to go on a subsequent four-match winning streak in the Championship. The run has put Coventry within range of the playoffs.

The winning streak came to a disappointing end at the CBS Arena on Wednesday night. 

The Sky Blues were taught a good lesson by a rampant Leeds United, who can consider themselves unlucky to have only won 2-0. Daniel Farke’s team passed up plenty of opportunities to secure a far more comprehensive win.

Ipswich Town made light work of their FA Cup third-round tie. The Tractor Boys defeated Bristol Rovers 3-0 at Portman Road in what was a routine victory. First-half goals from Kalvin Phillips, Jack Clarke and Jack Taylor put the game to bed before the halfway mark.

Since then, things have gone horribly wrong for Kieran McKenna’s team. 

The Tractor Boys have lost their last four in the Premier League since beating Rovers. The only caveat is that two of their matches were against Manchester City (6-0) and Liverpool (4-1).

Furthermore, the fourth defeat was at home to Southampton. Last Saturday’s 2-1 loss at Portman Road handed the Saints their first away win of the season in the Premier League and was only their second win of what’s been an awful 2024/25.

The defeat left Ipswich firmly stuck in the bottom three. It also means the Tractor Boys have conceded 14 goals in their last four matches, while only scoring two. Something that will be of great concern for boss Kieran McKenna.

There could be some squad rotation at the CBS, with Norman Bassette possibly coming into the team to replace Simms. But no matter who plays up front, it’s hard to see Ipswich keeping a clean sheet against the Sky Blues.

Coventry struggled against Leeds on Wednesday night. The step up in class caught them cold, and we can see Ipswich scoring against the Sky Blues, who looked all over the place at the back against the Championship leaders.

After a slow start to his career at Coventry City, Brandon Thomas-Asante has firmly established himself as a regular starter under Frank Lampard.

The new Coventry boss has reaped the rewards in recent weeks, with BSA scoring three and registering an assist in his last five matches.    

The former West Brom forward didn’t have his most effective night against Leeds on Wednesday, and was taken off at halftime in a slight tactical tweak. 

But he has built a partnership with Ellis Simms and has been a key player in Coventry’s recent good run of form. 

Don’t be surprised to see Thomas-Asante bounce back with a goal involvement against Ipswich.
