Canucks agree to terms with Marcus Pettersson on six-year extension

Marcus Pettersson is staying on the west coast.

Five days after the defenceman was acquired by the Vancouver Canucks, general manager Patrik Allvin announced that the club agreed to terms with Pettersson on a six-year, $33 million contract extension Wednesday.

Pettersson was traded to the Canucks from the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday night along with Drew O’Connor in exchange for defenceman Vincent Desharnais, forward Danton Heinen and a conditional first-round pick orginally acquired by Vancouver in the earlier J.T. Miller trade. Pettersson was slated to enter free agency on July 1.

The 28-year-old Swede has played in two games for the Canucks since his trade, playing 25:57 and 23:03 against Detroit and Colorado, respectively.

Per Daily Faceoff‘s Frank Seravalli, Pettersson received full no-move and no-trade clauses for the first three years of the deal, which changes to a 15-team no trade in the final three years.

“In just a couple of games, Marcus has already shown us the type of leadership, poise and character that we want in a top four defenceman,” Allvin said in a statement released by the team.  “He has a calming influence on the ice, uses his long reach and hockey smarts to break up plays and has a good first pass to help us create more offensively. We are extremely happy to get this deal done and look forward to working with him in both the short term and long term.”

Pettersson has played in 48 games this year split between the Penguins and Canucks, with three goals and 18 points.
