Topics & Sentence Frames For Slideshows I Have ELL Newcomers Create & Present – Part One

Every week, I have my ELL Newcomer students create short slideshows related to the theme we’re studying.

They then share them with each other “speed-dating” style, and sometimes they share with other classes.

They are great opportunities for speaking, writing, reading and listening.

This post is the first in a series where I’ll be sharing the slideshow assignments I give to students on Google Classroom. The ones that don’t have sentence frames in Google Classroom use Thematic Reports, all of which we share in our book The ESL/ELL Teacher’s Survival Guide.

They’re not very complicated – here is a downloadable example. If you don’t have the book, you can easily create them yourself or, with very little training, ChatGPT can make them.

As a “test,” I used this prompt with ChatGPT:

The following document is a model for a “Thematic Report.” It is designed for Beginning English Language Learners. It is for the theme of “School.” Can you create ones for the theme of sports, jobs, and food?  [I then copied and pasted the downloadable example].

It didn’t do too bad of a job.  Here’s what it came up with.
