Samsung might have downgraded the glass on the Galaxy S25 Ultra

The Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra is supposed to be the best smartphone that Samsung has to offer this year. If it is supposed to be the best, why has the company downgraded the glass of the Galaxy S25 Ultra? That’s according to a recent durability test over at JerryRigEverything, where they found that the Galaxy S25 Ultra scratches easier compared to its predecessor.

Scratch tests usually involve scratching using tools at varying sharpness. So far, most flagship phones tend to show signs of scratches at level 6 or level 7. Last year’s Galaxy S24 Ultra showed signs at level 7, but the Galaxy S25 Ultra showed signs earlier. This suggested to some users that the glass of the Galaxy S25 Ultra has been downgraded.

However, is this really a big deal? While it might seem like a downgrade, there could be a reason for that. Usually softer materials tend to scratch easier than harder ones. However, the downside of using a harder piece of glass means that the glass is more prone to shattering upon impact.

According to PhoneArena’s speculation, it is possible that Samsung noticed more users sending their devices in for repairs with shattered displays rather than scratched up ones. This could lead to the company going with a softer but less shatter-prone glass rather than a harder one.

After all, unless you’re carrying around unsheathed knives or diamonds in your pockets, there’s a good chance that almost nothing in your pockets or bags will be able to scratch the display of your phone. Plus, most people tend to use screen protectors anyway, so scratching isn’t really that big of a deal.
