It appears Jake Paul will finally get his chance to go up against another one of the world’s top boxers.
Paul is finalizing a deal to go toe-to-toe with Canelo Alvarez in a cruiserweight fight at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on May 3, ESPN’s Mike Coppinger reported Thursday.
Alvarez is the unified champion at 168 pounds and is a former 175-pound champion. He was expected to fight Terence Crawford but with a Paul fight in the works, he will be turning his attention to the social media star.
Paul last fought back in November against 58-year-old Mike Tyson, which the 28-year-old won via eight-round decision. The fight reportedly peaked at a staggering 64 million streams on Netflix despite fans showing their displeasure with the performance.
Paul has repeatedly called for a bout against Alvarez despite the world champion not willing to fight him until later in his career.
“When I’m done with boxing (at the top level), why not?” Alvarez told The Full Send Podcast in November when asked about the possibility of fighting Paul. “Yes, maybe. I think it’s good because it attracts fans who don’t normally watch boxing. They know Jake Paul, but they don’t know anything about boxing.”
Alvarez was last inside the ring in September, defeating Edgar Berlanga by unanimous decision to retain the WBA, WBC, WBO, and The Ring super middleweight titles.
