In a recent interview with Kinda Funny’s Greg Miller, former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida said they would have “resisted” the company’s controversial live service push. He also jokes that if he were in Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hermen Hulst’s shoes, they probably would have removed him from the position.

Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida hopes the live service push will “work in the end”

In the Kinda Funny Gamescast interview, Greg Miller asks Yoshida specifically about Sony’s live service push, and if it made sense.

“For me, like I was saying, I was managing this… annual budget, and I was responsible for allocating… money to what kind of games to make,” said Yoshida. “If, you know, the company was considering that, it probably wouldn’t have made sense to stop making… another God of War or a single player game, and put all the money into these live service games.”

After giving his personal take, he does explain that he doesn’t believe Sony told Hulst to stop making single player games. Instead, the company gave them more resources for the live service push while continuing their proven work in single player games. He also states that he hopes this strategy will “work in the end.”

Miller then jokingly asks how jealous Yoshida was of Herman that he got additional resources for the live service push, but he did not for the now dead PlayStation Vita.

“I thought, you know, if I was in the position of Herman [Hulst], I probably would have tried to resist that direction,” said Yoshida. “Maybe that’s one of the reasons they removed me.”

On one hand, Sony’s live service push for PlayStation has been successful thanks to Helldivers 2, which has done incredibly well for the company. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Concord was an unfortunate failure that only lasted for two weeks before being taken offline.
