Nintendo has passed a big milestone recently with the lifetime sales of its Nintendo Switch console, reporting that it has now sold over 150 million units worldwide. The Nintendo Switch launched all the way back in 2017. The Switch gained immediate overnight success for its innovative design. A hybrid console that was both a home console and a handheld.
That success has led it to become one of the best-selling consoles of all time. The Nintendo Switch still trails behind the likes of Sony’s PlayStation 2, which has sold over 160 million consoles. It’s also still a few million behind Nintendo’s own DS handheld which has sold 154.02 million units. The Nintendo Switch, by comparison, has sold 150.86 million units according to Nintendo’s latest IR Information report.
Nintendo hits Switch sales milestone amid missing expectations in Q3
Although the Nintendo Switch is nearing the milestone of being Nintendo’s best-selling console, it still fell short of expectations in Q3 for the company’s current fiscal year. Nintendo says that the Switch sales didn’t meet expectations for the quarter ending December 31, 2024. Regardless of missing the company’s expectations, the Switch is still doing well. “Although Nintendo Switch hardware and software sales through the third quarter were below expectations, Nintendo Switch continues to be enjoyed by many people,” Nintendo said.
It wouldn’t be a surprise if Switch sales continued to decline over the coming months. Nintendo is expected to fully reveal the Switch 2 in April. The console should also be launching later this year. With the Switch 2 around the corner, fewer consumers are likely to be putting money toward the Switch. Instead choosing to save their money for Nintendo’s follow-up.
That won’t stop Nintendo from trying to sell as many Switch units as it can though. The company still plans to release new games for the Switch in the near future, too.
“Going forward, we will continue to release new offerings so even more consumers keep playing Nintendo Switch. Looking at software, we released Donkey Kong Country Returns HD in January and plan to follow up with the release of Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition in March. Other software publishers also have plans to release a wide variety of titles, and we will strive to invigorate the platform by continually introducing new titles in addition to the existing titles,” the company said.
Nintendo software sales have surpassed 1.3 billion units
Software remains a strong growth point for Nintendo. Switch game sales have now surpassed 1.3 billion units. Specifically, the company has now sold 1.359 billion software units for the console. It’s highly likely that The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom played a huge role in this number of software sales. It was released on September 26, 2024, putting it right in line with the beginning of Nintendo’s third quarter.
That being said, Nintendo doesn’t mention in this report which software sold the most units.
