Netflix Scraps Its Prince Documentary Release

Netflix has scrapped the release of what was going to be a six-part Prince documentary directed by Ezra Edelman (“O.J.: Made in America”).

Netflix said in a statement shared with Variety on Thursday that: “The Prince Estate and Netflix have come to a mutual agreement that will allow the estate to develop and produce a new documentary featuring exclusive content from Prince’s archive. As a result, the Netflix documentary will not be released.”

According to the trade’s sources, representatives for the late artist’s estate have claimed the first cut of the film isn’t what was expected. It was reportedly filled with “dramatic factual inaccuracies and sensationalized renderings” of events from the celebrated “Purple Rain” and “Raspberry Beret” singer’s life.

Edelman had been working on the film for over four years and given extensive access to Prince’s archives. The deal reportedly called for a six-hour work, but Edelman reportedly delivered nine hours of footage – thus violating the agreement and allowing the estate to withhold music rights.

The news today follows on from a report in The New York Times late last year that suggested the documentary featured some major revelations about Prince’s life from his own childhood to his relationships with his wife and ex-girlfriends.

In the wake of this news, Prince’s estate has published a video on the X platform touting “the vault has been freed.”
