A senior VP at Marvel Studios has confirmed that the company has no plans to re-cast the character of T’Challa in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The late Chadwick Boseman played the role over several films, most notably the first “Black Panther,” but passed away five years ago. The second film underwent a drastic overhaul before filming, his character dying (off screen) at its start. That second film passed the Black Panther mantle to Shuri (Letitia Wright).
A report emerged last month indicating that with the upcoming “Avengers” films, a variant of T’Challa could arrive with a different actor in the role.
Nate Moore, the VP of Production & Development at Marvel Studios, spoke with ComicBook.com during press for “Captain America: Brave New World” and was asked about the rumors of finding a new T’Challa to play Black Panther. Moore dismissed the talk then and there:
“The truth is, there’s no truth to those rumors. Never say never to anything, we haven’t really had a lot of creative conversations with Ryan Coogler yet, because he’s finishing his film Sinners, which comes out this year. We’ll get into it later this year, but everything you read online is not true, if for no other reason than we just haven’t started [working on ‘Black Panther 3’].”
Coogler is expected to return for a third “Black Panther” film, with Denzel Washington rumored to be a part of it. As for what might happen in it, story elements from the new “Captain America” film, namely the discovery of Adamantium, will likely come into play, says Moore:
“I’m sure Wakanda will have an opinion about the arrival of adamantium. And I’m sure Wakanda had an opinion on Sam Wilson as Captain America. Clearly, they seem to support him, as they’ve given him some technology to help him out. But Wakanda isn’t in the best graces with the U.S. government, so there’s a possibility for conflict in a lot of different ways. I think Wakanda, to me, gets to play in the same political thriller sandbox as Captain America because it does deal with globalization and global politics, so anything is possible.”
“Captain America: Brave New World” will open in cinemas February 14th.
