It’s looking more and more like “Ford vs. Ferrari” and “Logan” filmmaker James Mangold’s next film will be his “Star Wars” movie first announced over two years ago.
Taking place some 25,000 years before the events of the original trilogy, ‘Dawn of the Jedi’ is expected to deal with the first users of The Force and the very origins of the Jedi order. “House of Cards” creator Beau Willimon has been co-writing the script with Mangold.
Since its announcement, little in the way of updates have been given regarding the project beyond comments by Mangold himself during press for 2023’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” and last year’s “A Complete Unknown”.
Those comments have been about the level of creative freedom more than any storytelling or production specifics. Today, scooper MyTimeToShineH (via SFFGazette.com) is reporting that the current plan for the film is to begin shooting in Decemher.
They say the script is expected to be finalised by the Summer, with casting to begin immediately after. If true, it also strongly suggests that Mangold’s “Swamp Thing” film at DC Studios will have to wait, with the director potentially not getting around to it for several years.
Mangold’s film will likely be the third “Star Wars” film to hit the big screen post-“Rise of Skywalker”. The already shot “The Mandalorian & Grogu” will be the first to open in May 2026, while Shawn Levy’s “Star Wars” film got a huge boost this week with Ryan Gosling in talks to join with shooting roughly aiming for a Fall start.
The Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy-directed and Daisy Ridley-led “Star Wars: New Jedi Order” movie, meanwhile, just got a new scribe (George Nolfi) which suggests production will not begin until next year.
