2018’s Kingdom Come: Deliverance is one of the most impressive action RPGs ever made. Taking place in medieval Europe — and with incredible attention to detail to make sure it is historically accurate — the game sets off an epic tale with players taking Henry, a son of a blacksmith, on an incredible adventure. The sequel, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, expertly continues that story while showing significant strides in gameplay and graphics as developer Warhorse Studios has grown plenty in the past seven years. The end result is a truly special experience that is worth putting the time into.
What players first notice in Kingdom Come: Deliverance II is just how thrilling the combat is and how much extra polish has been given to that aspect from the first game. The game opens up with an incredible action sequence and allows you to take part in a large battle before it then backtracks to a few weeks before it took place. Blocking and being able to attack off parries are key for the game’s hand-to-hand combat. It gels together for a really satisfying action loop and cements it as a true action RPG, where skill and strategy matter, rather than just an RPG with action in it, as is often sadly the case.
But what is really special about Kingdom Come: Deliverance II is how open it truly is. The number of systems and choices at your disposal is staggering. You truly get to decide who Henry is as a person and can act it out in a way with real consequences. Whether you want to live by a code of honor or be a total degenerate, the game allows you to do so. Given how many games depend on the illusion of choice, actually having this much freedom is an incredible feeling and one of the game’s most significant achievements.
There’s also an incredible sense of progression throughout the game. Nearly everything that you wind up doing in the game will impact both how the other characters view you and your own abilities. It rewards players for committing down a path and really lets you flesh out who Henry is as a warrior and person. The reputation system is brilliant, keeping players in check and there’s a real weight to every choice you make because there are direct consequences as a result.
For example, I played much of the game with a dog (Mutt from the original) by my side, as I’m a dog person. The game rewarded me for being a good dow owner, as I was able to learn more commands and gain perks. Rather than just a cute companion, he was able to distract foes, track down things, and even boost my charisma. Overall, the attention to detail is really just astounding, and getting to see how these different systems interact as the game goes on is a real delight and is what makes this game a truly special experience.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance II Review: Final Verdict
Kingdom Come: Deliverance II is a true achievement. It features the most immersive open world I’ve ever played in and rewards you for every hour that you put into it. Featuring a stellar story, an unprecedented level of freedom, and some truly spectacular moments, developer Warhorse Studios has shown itself as one of the best studios in all of gaming.
