“IT” Prequel Series Ain’t Afraid To Kill

One of the bigger HBO series set to launch this year is “IT: Welcome to Derry,” a prequel to the two-film adaptation of Stephen King’s iconic “IT” novel.

The story unfolds in 1962 in the period before Pennywise goes into a 27-year hibernation cycle and re-emerges in 1989 when it encounters the Losers Club. Andy Muschietti, who directed the films, developed the nine-episode series with producers Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs.

As has previously been indicated, each subsequent season will be set in the preceding period when Pennywise awakens and kills. The hope is for three seasons, which would mean the second season would take place in 1935 and the third in 1908.

Bill Skarsgard Pennywise will last through it all, but that structure means any of the characters you see could be killed without impacting subsequent seasons. Casting director Rich Delia spoke with The Direct about the challenge of casting a new group of memorable kids and confirmed a few won’t make it through the nine-episode run:

“It was just trying to uncover every stone as possible, to find these kids and find the most amazing, memorable kids that the audience will love, you know, falling in love with, and then some of them, of course, watching them die.”

Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, James Remar, Stephen Rider, Madeleine Stowe, and Rudy Mancuso star in the series, which will launch later this year. Early reports have suggested the network is very happy with what they’ve seen of the series thus far.
