Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke is reportedly set to write a reimagining of the 1950 Gregory Peck western “The Gunfighter” at 20th Century Studios.
The project is currently at the earliest stages of development with Hawke’s deal said to be only one of writing and producing as of now.
The hope is once he has completed the script with his writing partner Shelby Gaines, the Oscar nominee could potentially direct.
Peck starred in the original film as Jimmy Ringo, an aging and notorious gunslinger who is weary of his violent past. Upon arrival in Cayenne, he sets out to reconnect with his estranged wife and their young son.
Unfortunately, his reputation precedes him, and Ringo finds himself pursued by young gunslingers eager to make a name for themselves.
the film has been acclaimed for its introspective and critical approach to the western genre. Hawke has previously stated the original is one of his favorite films of all time.
Hawke most recently wrote, directed and produced “Wildcat” which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival.
