For the first time since its launch, Disney+ has reported a decline in subscribers. According to Disney’s earnings results for 2025, Disney+ lost 700,000 subscribers in the first quarter of 2025. The streaming giant now stands at 124.6 million subscribers. This is quite a significant drop that might raise some concerns about its future. However, Disney CEO Bob Iger remains unfazed, stating that it isn’t as bad as expected.
So, what’s behind this sudden subscriber loss? A major factor is the recent price increase from $7.99 to $9.99 per month. Price hikes are common in the streaming industry. We’ve seen other services such as Netflix increase its prices from time to time. While Disney+ is still cheaper than Netflix, the price increase means consumers will need to pay more than before.
On top of that, Disney has also started cracking down on password sharing. This makes it harder for people to share accounts and save money. Like we said, price increase in streaming services are normal. As these companies invest more into their shows and infrastructures, they have to increase prices to cover those costs.
However, we have to wonder at what point does it get too expensive? Many companies are moving towards the subscription model, not just in streaming, but for apps as well. When you add all of these subscriptions up, you’ll realize that you might be spending more than you thought. At this rate, Disney+ and other streaming services could start seeing a greatest loss in subscribers. Another problem is that users might return to piracy again should these prices become too high for their liking.
