De’Aaron Fox shares heartfelt goodbye to Kings fans
“I can’t quite find the words to express what I want to say, but thank you. Coming in as a 19-year-old kid and leaving as a 27-year-old man, I’m grateful I got to spend the beginning of my young adulthood here. The love for the city is unmatched,” he wrote.
How does a person say goodbye to a place they’ve called home for nearly a decade?
After being granted his wish with a trade to join Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs, De’Aaron Fox tried on Monday.
Fox shared a sincere farewell to the city of Sacramento on his social media accounts, expressing his gratitude and love for the support shown by Kings fans during his tenure there.
“I can’t quite find the words to express what I want to say, but thank you. Coming in as a 19-year-old kid and leaving as a 27-year-old man, I’m grateful I got to spend the beginning of my young adulthood here. The love for the city is unmatched,” he wrote.
“To the fans — y’all deserve the best. I wanted to end my career here and never expected it would end this way, but I’ll always be grateful for your support.”
The eight-year NBA veteran spent his entire career to this point with the Kings, averaging 21.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 6.1 assists. He also averaged over one steal per game every season and led the league with 2.0 steals per game in 2023-24.
Fox won NBA Clutch Player of the Year in 2022-23, also appearing in the All-Star game and earning a third-team All-NBA selection that season.
The six-foot-three guard is the fourth-leading scorer in Kings’ franchise history and is also ranked fourth in assists and second in steals.
Fox’s lone playoff appearance with Sacramento came in 2023, when they lost a first-round series in seven games to the Golden State Warriors. The Kings’ lack of playoff appearances and success was a pivotal factor in Fox deciding he wasn’t going to sign there long term.
“I want to make sure that we’re in a position to try to win in the future, because that’s ultimately what I want to do,” Fox said to Draymond Green on his podcast, The Draymond Green Show, in December. “For me, it’s: Are we looking like we’re continuing to get better year after year, and are we going to be able to compete at a high level?”
