Canadian Matthew Anderson flirted with golf history on Friday.
The 24-four-year-old hit the turn during the second round of the Korn Ferry Tour’s Astara Golf Championship with a 28 on his card, setting up a run at the magic number 59 in Bogota, Colombia.
After a bogey-free, 10-birdie day to jump from outside the cut line into the top 10, Anderson ended with 60, just missing out on history after capping the round off with five consecutive pars.
Anderson said he was aware he had a shot at 59.
“Obviously you do whatever you can not to focus on it, but I knew,” he said. “When I got to like 9 I was like, this is getting pretty real now. Then you start to feel the emotions and stuff. But even under tension, like just do your process and swing free and do the best you can and whatever happens, happens, right? That’s all I was trying to do.”
The Mississauga, Ont. native is playing in his fourth Korn Ferry event since earning his card last season, and this will mark the first time he has finished above the cut line.
He currently sits in a log jam at 8 under, five strokes behind leader Ross Steelman of the U.S.
Myles Creighton pf Digby, N.S. is at 9 under and Étienne Papineau of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que. is at 8 under.
Anderson became the first Canadian to win on the PGA Americas Tour last year, when he took home the victory at the 69th ECP Brazil Open.
He almost won again a few months later, this time on home soil during the BioSteel Championship, but ended tied for second one stroke back of the winner.
Anderson finished third in the final standings for the 2024 PGA Americas Tour, earning his Korn Ferry Tour membership.
