The UFC will need to find a new main event for the upcoming UFC Fight Night set to take place March 1 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.
Brandon Royval announced on social media Wednesday that he is withdrawing from a scheduled five-round matchup with fellow ranked flyweight contender Manel Kape.
“Unfortunately I’m going to have to pull out of my fight,” Royval wrote on Instagram. “I’m sorry to Manel Kape and my fans. I’m facing an injury that has me questioning when I’ll be able to train again. This is absolutely a fight I think needs to happen for the flyweight division but as of right now competing month has been ill-advised.
“Love y’all and I apologize from the bottom of my heart. I’ll have more details on my YouTube this week.”
The organization has not made any announcements about Royval’s withdrawal, so it is not immediately clear whether the UFC will attempt to find a replacement opponent for Kape to remain on that fight card.
The only other flyweight matchup scheduled for the March 1 card is a preliminary bout between Charles Johnson and Ramazan Temirov. Johnson is a 10-fight UFC veteran riding a four-fight winning streak and theoretically could be a suitable replacement for Royval, while Temirov is coming off a first-round TKO win in his UFC debut back in October.
Royval is the No. 1 contender in the men’s 125-pound division coming off back-to-back five-round split decision wins over Tatsuro Taira and former champion Brandon Moreno.
The 32-year-old would typically be in a position to fight for the title next, however, he already has two losses to the current champion Alexandre Pantoja.
Kape is the No. 6-ranked contender in the weight class. The 31-year-old has won five of his past six fights and is coming off a great performance in a technical knockout win over Bruno Silva in December.
