2025 Met Gala Unveils Dress Code & Taps Grace Wales Bonner, Dapper Dan, Edward Enninful for Host Comittee
As May approaches, the Met Gala has uncovered more details surrounding the annual fashion festivity, including the host committee members and the official dress code.A fitting theme titled "Tailored to You," leans into the exhibition's sartorial focus. "‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style" will offer an in-depth review of Black dandy fashion, a movement of elegant Black menswear that dates back to the 19th century. The costume exhibition will broken down into 12 parts: Ownership, Presence, Distinction, Disguise, Freedom, Champion, Respectability, Jook, Heritage, Beauty, Cool, and Cosmopolitanism. To join co-chairs, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell, Lewis Hamilton, Colman Domingo, Lebron James, and Anna Wintour, the event will enlist British designer Grace Wales Bonner, former British Vogue chief editor Edward Enninful, and legendary Black fashion figure Dapper Dan. Other members include André 3000, Simone Biles, Doechii, Ayo Edebiri, Spike Lee and Olivier Rousteing. In a statement shared with Business of Fashion, Costume Institute Curator Andrew Bolton said “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style is our department’s first exhibition devoted to menswear in more than 20 years." "The show also reflects our ongoing commitment to diversifying our exhibitions in a way that is authentic to The Costume Institute," he continued. It's not surprising that menswear is finally getting a dedicated platform at the Met Gala and its accompanying exhibition, as the segment saw particular growth in the last few years. Increased interest in fashion from men via digital channels and the shifting aesthetics of masculinity purveyed by vanguard designers continue to drive the menswear segment forward. As a result, tailoring has also received greater attention, impacting styles not only in menswear but across the board. A recent example comes from renowned rapper and 2025 committee member Doechii, who wore a suit by Thom Browne at the recent Grammys ceremony last Sunday. Also on the committee, designer Grace Wales Bonner's unique approach that fuses tailored silhouettes and sports style represents this growing interest on the design side —her FW25 collection includes a collaboration with Crombie Ltd, a classic British clothier specializing in fine tailoring.Stay tuned to Hypebeast for the latest updates on the Met Gala.
